KiOS installer Windows 10 issue

When using Windows 10 it might happen that after flashing (or before) errors occur. We've discussed this with the team, and they have applied several fixes to etcher. As you may know the KiOS installer is forker from, so this means that to fix this issue we need to merge with their root repository.

As the installer is not our main priority, and to be honest developing it cross-platform isn't that straight forward. We propose another solution (thanks Spongebob Brandon), to run the installer as Windows 7.

  1. Navigate to the install directory (ie. C:/Program Files/KiOS or C:/Program Files (x86)/KiOS)
  2. Right click KiOS.exe and select Properties
  3. Select the Compatibility tab
  4. Check the "Run this program in..." and in the dropbox select "Windows 7"
  5. Click OK

Yeah, it seems that when running on Windows 10 it doesn't show any options when you click "select version", so it doesn't let you continue with the flash. If I run it on a Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 machine, they show up fine, but for some reason not on Windows 10.

The compatibility mode works for me after trying many different things, but only Windows 7 or 8, not Vista. The program will actually refuse to install on any machine that isn't running Windows 7 or newer.

Strangly, if I run it as administrator, it breaks the application again. This is leading me to believe that is has something to do with a change in the Windows 10 UAC system.

The advanced installation method also works just fine using the original Etcher installer as well.

    Glad I could help!
